CNA Training in New York and Beyond: What are the Options?

by | Jun 25, 2014 | Education and Training

For people interested in starting a career as a certified nurse’s assistant, they will need to first receive CNA Training in New York, or whichever state they plan to live and work in. CNAs work alongside registered nurses in a variety of medical care facilities. They assist nurses by moving or repositioning patients, taking vital signs, helping patients with hygiene and eating, and administering medications.

CNA training varies by state because each state has its own requirements for certifying nursing assistants. All CNA hopefuls will complete a certain amount of classroom education and have to complete a specified number of clinical experience hours. After they successfully complete these requirements, they will be able to take their state competency exam. If they pass, they will be able to be hired as a certified nursing assistant. After passing the exam, some states require continued education or clinical training from time to time so that assistants stay up-to-date with training.

Those who are trying to become a CNA can start training programs in a number of ways.

Some community colleges offer CNA training that prepares students for working in hospitals and extended care facilities. They typically take courses that are prerequisites to registered nurse programs, and have specialized clinical training classes.

Federally funded programs offer training where students live on a campus during training, and most of their expenses are taken care of throughout. These are for people aged 16-24. National health and medical organizations may also offer training, but some costs are involved for the student.

Nursing homes sometimes offer CNA training for their current employees. Students are trained at the nursing home facilities and are usually required to agree to work for the nursing home as a CNA for a certain amount of time in return for their training.

Finally, vocational schools and private career schools are another option for CNA training. These institutions usually offer a small number of interrelated medical training programs. CNA Training in New York at New Age Training is an example of a career school program.

Many CNA programs are little or no cost if the training is completed under certain stipulations. Other programs can be between $500-$2000, but are usually on the more affordable end, with grants available for some students. New Age Training for CNAs can take between 4-10 weeks to complete, and can lead to success for years to come.
