How Interior Architects Differ from Interior Designers

by | Mar 28, 2019 | Education

There has been a long standing debate about the difference between architects and interior designers. In fact, sometimes architects who focus on interiors are often confused with designers. In reality, there are some stark differences between the two. If you are considering attending one of the interior architecture masters programs, you should know what the field entails. Take a look at the differences between these two careers.

Where They Share Characteristics

At the surface level, these two fields have much in common. Both require a certain amount of education, training and skill to perform the job. Both of these professionals aim to create an interior space that resolves a problem for a client. They use planning and spatial design to achieve this purpose. They both have to consider the safety and appearance of the space to reach their goal. Both also need some understanding of the technical aspects involved with the interior of a building.

Where They Differ

The main difference between these two fields is that they adhere to two different disciplines. For one, the practice of architecture involves using a strict set of rules related to construction. Unlike interior designers, architects can actually make changes to the underlying structure of a home. As such, they need to be aware of many safety considerations when they work through their plan.

An architect’s focus is on the functionality of the home. They will need to plan for the plumbing and electrical needs of the property. They will also have to incorporate the permanent design elements of the home. In the end, the interior architect will be responsible for the placement of walls and other structures that will divide the home in to separate living spaces.

An interior designer has a different focus. Designers work with the look of the home. They are largely responsible for choosing the materials and colors that will adorn the interior spaces. They may also be responsible for arranging the lighting fixtures that will be used throughout the home. In summary, interior designers deal more with the surface level than the undercarriage of the home.

You will undoubtedly learn more about these differences when you study at one of the interior architecture masters programs. You can get your start at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Review the institute’s website at saic.edu for additional information.
